Use of Psychometrics in Recruitment & Selection
The benefits of using Psychometrics
Psychometrics (personality inventories, attitude measures and ability tests) can give valuable insights within a recruitment and selection process.
The key characteristics and benefits of psychometrics are that they are:
- Objective- the results are not influenced by the bias of the administrator.
- Valid - they provide consistent measurement of a specific and discrete set of characteristics.
- Reliable - they measure in a consistent way. The potential for error is therefore small and quantifiable.
- Standardised - they are administered and scored according to strict guidelines; the results are then rated against a fixed standard.
- Fair - they will show clear differences between people, but only on the behaviour being tested; they will not discriminate unfairly against any group on the basis of irrelevant characteristics.
What Salomons can do for you
Before deciding to use Psychometric Instruments, we work with you to ensure you are clear as to what information you will gain from them and how they will fit with other processes used. Our approach is to select appropriate tests that measure dimensions which will provide information and add value to our clients' assessment and selection processes.
Tests can be administered and delivered in a number of different ways, depending on the test selected and the client’s need. We believe that feedback is an essential and integral part of the assessment and development process. We therefore offer formal feedback to all test-takers in the form of a written report and a one to one session with one of our accredited consultants.
We regularly update and develop our capability in psychometric solutions. We can offer a range of interventions, including:
Personality:
Ability:
16PF
- The 16PF instrument is a robust measure of personality traits developed by Raymond Cattell in 1949. It assesses an individual’s personality against 16 personality factors providing a valid and accurate predictor of future behaviour.
- At Salomons we can use the results of this questionnaire to shape behavioural interview questions (as part of an assessment process).
Occupational Personality Questionnaires (OPQ)
- The Occupational Personality Questionnaire is designed to provide organisations with information on the aspects of an individual’s behavioural style that will impact on their performance of competencies at work. It provides in-depth insight across the key competencies required in graduate, management and leadership positions. We work with you to understand how it can measure the competencies required by your organisation in a particular job.
Able Series
- The Aptitude for Business Learning Exercises Series combines the richness of work simulation exercises with the objectivity of psychometric tests to understand how candidates' skills and abilities work together in a job context. It measures the potential to learn a given task or job, to succeed quickly in that job and to adapt to a changing work environment.
- In Salomons we use our expertise to select the appropriate tests for you and help you to interpret the results.
Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal
- This is an assessment tool designed to measure an individual's critical thinking skills. Careful, analytical reasoning is an important part of most management roles and the Watson Glaser test has been widely used in the UK for many years. It tests candidates’ skills in inference, recognition of assumptions, deduction, interpretation and evaluation of arguments.
- These skills can be developed. We can tailor development courses to take account of the results from use of these tests with a particular group.
General and Managerial Ability Tests (GMA)
- The three assessments that make up the GMA - Numerical, Verbal and Abstract - were developed specifically to assess those with higher level ability and senior managerial potential. They measure not just knowledge but numerical reasoning, critical thinking and flexibility of thought.
SHL® People Performance Tests
- SHL have tests, questionnaires, exercises and 360 tools tailored to different jobs and levels.
- Salomons consultants can work with you to identify which tool meets your needs and add the value and insights from these to your selection process.
