NHS 24, Organisational Recruitment

The Need

In an initiative to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to A&E, the NHS wanted to develop a new service to deliver healthcare advice and reassurance over the phone. From the top down, they needed to recruit around 700 staff, with the right skill-set, to work from three contact centres who would be able to develop this new service.

Our Role

We developed assessment centres around the NHS 24 competency framework to recruit call handlers, specialists, team leaders, service managers and assistant directors. The centres used a variety of bespoke exercises to assess the competence of applicants and inform a development plan for the new organisation. The process included comprehensive feedback for all candidates which informed personal development plans of new recruits and helped unsuccessful participants improve their technique for future job applications.

The Outcome

All posts were successfully filled and candidates’ learning needs aggregated so that training resources could be targeted effectively amongst the new recruits. Salomons trained a number of assessors from NHS 24 and other NHS organisations, forging partnerships with the wider NHS community and transplanting this learning into those organisations for future use.

NHS 24 benefited from an increased staff retention rate and many candidates initially recruited as Nurse Advisors have since successfully secured positions as Team Leaders or Clinical Services Managers through a further assessment centre process.
