Action Learning Sets
"I feel much more confident in my ability to facilitate a learning set. Being on the programme has made me go out looking for opportunities to facilitate which I wouldn’t have done otherwise and as a result I have much more credibility within the Trust and far more opportunities to get involved in interesting projects"
Participant from a Learning Set in Yorkshire
What is an Action Learning Set?
An action learning set is a process whereby a group of peers come together to learn from and with each other. Typically 5-8 individuals meet at regular intervals to explore issues and problems that are relevant to them, with the help of a facilitator who guides the meeting.
Critical to the success of an action learning set is creating an environment in which learning can take place. It must be safe and supportive to explore issues whilst challenging members to encourage reflection and risk taking.
The focus in an action learning set is on the individual. When a set is working effectively, members learn about the problems and issues that they and their colleagues are bringing to the set; they learn about themselves and develop their levels of self awareness. They learn how to benefit from the process of exploring issues, implementing solutions, monitoring results and being held to account in future meetings.
