Improving Organisational Effectiveness

The need

The average top team spends 90% of its time on operational issues leaving little time to consider strategy. The executive team of an NHS Primary Care Trust (PCT) recognised that it was getting too involved in operational detail. They needed their managers to take more responsibility and free up their time to set direction.

Our role

Salomons identified that organisational systems and processes may have been hindering managers from carrying out their roles effectively. Through stakeholder focus groups and 1-1 interviews we identified the key issues in the organisation. Our report highlighted the perceived organisational strengths and limitations and made recommendations for the PCT to take forward

The outcome

We worked through the report with the executive management team to help them prioritise the issues that needed to be addressed. In a practical session we facilitated an action plan to take forward the changes and give them back the time to concentrate on strategic issues.

Organisation development skills for HR practitioners

The need

A group of organisations undergoing a period of radical and sustained change wanted their HR practitioners to develop their skills to support the transformations. The HR network needed to be able to diagnose needs and implement practical solutions in the work place.

Our role

Salomons gave participants the tools and techniques they needed through action based learning. Over nine months of modules, work based projects, learning groups and mentoring, the participants practised their skills in a real and supportive environment. From diagnosis to developing effective change strategies, they were able to implement solutions to their projects.

The outcome

At a final stakeholder conference the HR professionals presented their projects and action plans for their respective organisations.  The participants’ growing confidence in contributing to the OD agenda was proven by their increasing levels of influence and their ability to deliver a range of solutions for their stakeholders.
