Psychometrics in Leadership and Management Development

To be an effective leader, individuals need to raise their self awareness to be able to understand themselves and the impact they have on those around them. Different types of Psychometrics can be used to increase understanding of both personality and ability. This increased understanding provides a powerful foundation for developing the skills needed to be an effective leader and manager.

Salomons has experience using psychometrics to  develop leaders and managers through Development Centres, Coaching and Skills Programmes as well as through feedback for individuals.

The Psychometric Tools we use at Salomons in Leadership and Management Development

Personality

  • 16PF

The 16PF instrument is a robust measure of personality traits developed by Raymond Cattell in 1949. It assesses an individual’s personality against 16 personality factors providing a valid and accurate assessment of behaviours. At Salomons we can use the results of this questionnaire to shape an interview to explore leadership development opportunities and improve personal effectiveness.

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Step I and II

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) questionnaire is the most widely used personality questionnaire worldwide, based on over 50 years of research. It measures individuals’ preferences along four scales resulting in one of 16 types with a unique set of behavioural characteristics and values. We use these results in coaching to enhance personal development, to identify leadership style, to understand and develop change management and problem solving skills and to develop effective teams.

  • Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire

Emotional Intelligence is a key skill set for any leader. This questionnaire measures seven elements comprising overall emotional intelligence (EI) through a self report or 360 degree feedback process. It predicts elements of management such as how individuals will perform under pressure and their ability to influence and motivate others. We work with you to ensure this diagnostic adds the value to your assessment or development centre

  • Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI)

The SDI tool helps identify personal strengths in relating to others when things are going well and when the person faces conflict. It provides an understanding of the motivations behind behaviour that can be used to improve relationships between individuals and make a positive impact on team dynamics. In addition to using it in leadership development programmes, we use SDI in our work with teams where it can be a catalyst for improving cooperation and performance

  • Situational Leadership Behaviour Analysis (LBA)

The LBA instrument from the Ken Blanchard companies is an excellent tool for understanding perceptions of Leadership style by revealing what direct reports actually experience—often an eye-opener for leaders. Through feedback with one of our consultants, managers can understand their leadership style flexibility and effectiveness as well as understanding their tendencies to misuse or overuse styles

Ability

  • Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal

This is an assessment tool designed to measure an individual's critical thinking skills. Careful, analytical reasoning is an important part of most management roles and the Watson Glaser test has been widely used in the UK for many years. It tests candidates’ skills in inference, recognition of assumptions, deduction, interpretation and evaluation of arguments. These skills are developable and Salomons can tailor development courses as a result of these tests

  • General and Managerial Ability Tests (GMA)

The three assessments that make up the GMA - Numerical, Verbal and Abstract - were developed specifically to assess those with higher level ability and senior managerial potential.  They measure not just knowledge but numerical reasoning, critical thinking and flexibility of thought.

360 degree feedback tools

  • Transformational Leadership Qualities 360 degree feedback (TLQ)

The transformational leadership questionnaire is a 360 degree feedback tool that looks at a leader’s ability to inspire and drive real change in an organisation. Working with qualified feedback facilitators, individuals can identify development opportunities to take their career to the next level.

  • NHS Leadership Qualities Framework 360 degree feedback (LQF)

The LQF leadership questionnaire is the 360 degree feedback tool used by the NHS. It provides an objective assessment of a leaders’ competence in three areas, Delivering the Service, Personal Qualities and Setting Direction. Salomons qualified feedback facilitators have extensive experience in helping individuals to identify development opportunities and improve their performance. We also have experience of working with senior teams to use the data collectively to inform team development.

Motivational and Influencing Inventories

  • Influencing Strategies Exercise

This diagnostic tool highlights the importance of developing a repertoire of influencing strategies that can be drawn on in different situations. The results can help an individual become more successful at achieving their goals by choosing a strategy that fits the circumstances. The tool makes it clear which strategies are likely to be more effective in different situations and levels. We use this tool to help managers improve their influence at all levels and in our influencing programmes.

  • Motivational Inventories

Being able to motivate oneself and a team is a key leadership skill. Salomons can work with you to understand your motivational drivers and learn to identify them within your team using questionnaires supported by theories and practical examples.
