Coaching

What is coaching?

In today’s busy world, there is rarely enough time to reflect on our actions, to review what we have achieved, or to consider what we would do differently in the future.  Coaching can provide that reflective space.  It is a powerful process for supporting and enabling you (as the client) to explore and resolve issues that are important to you.  The context for coaching is that the client has the desire to change something.

All coaching relationships will necessarily cover the “whole person”, to varying degrees.  The role of the coach is to provide a structure, to support and to challenge the client in working on their key issues and in arriving at their own resolution of these issues.

Coaching can help you to perform more effectively.  You may be:

  • Just starting out on your management career,
  • Wanting to build your confidence,
  • Facing change or a challenging situation,
  • Interested in changing career direction, or,
  • Simply wanting to become more effective in your role.

Whatever your situation, coaching offers you a confidential and supportive environment in which to work through the issues that are important to you.

Alternatively, you may find that mentoring is more suited to your needs.  The mentor uses many of the same skills as a coach.  The key difference between the two is in the nature of the relationship.  A mentor is typically someone in a senior role, who represents a “role model” to the client, from within the client’s organisation or broader area of work.  The mentor draws on their own experiences and expertise to advise the client on specific work and career issues.  For more information see setting up a mentoring scheme.
